Book by Rachel Nelson, Score by Betsy and Bill Peterson
Come climb up the beanstalk with Jack for a musical adventure you’ll not soon forget filled with wonderful music and an array of delightful characters.
Recommended for elementary/middle schools.
Who can resist that endearing, delightful knucklehead Jack? An empty cupboard and overdue rent sends him out to sell Buttercup, the family cow, and what does Jack return with? You guessed it: six scrawny beans! Of course they’re magic beans, according to some fluttering fairies that cut the deal with Jack. In a snit, Jack’s mom throws them out the window.
You may think you know the rest of the story but just hold on. In this tuneful retelling of the timeless fairy tale, we have a trio of thugs, some lovely castle maidens, and a king who was turned into a giant by an old crone. With a big dose of humor and the tale’s inherent suspense, this is a grand opportunity for each young actor to play his or her very own engaging character in an enchanting musical about a boy, a cow, and some beans. Songs your cast and audience are sure to enjoy include “A Sunny Day in the Clouds,” “Everything’s a Little Hazy,” and “It’s Nice to be Naughty,” just to name a few.

Our students loved performing in “Jack and the Beanstalk!” This funny, charming take on the classic fairy tale is full of hilarious characters, witty dialogue, fun and lively music, and heartfelt moments. As a director who often doesn’t know the size of the cast before choosing the show, I love working with A Pocket Full Of Plays because all their material is easily adjustable (if needed) to any size and skill level of cast.
